How to Play Historiae: Rules and Gameplay

Game Setup

  1. Each player starts with 10 cards, while the rest of the deck becomes the draw pile.
  2. Keep a discard pile - it will play a crucial role in strategic decision-making.

Game Turns

Each turn consists of three phases:

1. Draw
Choose one card from the deck or the discard pile and add it to your hand.

2. Play
After drawing, players have several options:

  • Play a Set of Cards: If you have three or more cards from the same historical period, arrange them in chronological order to play the set. Correct sets stay on the table, but an incorrect order forces you to draw another card.
  • Add to an Existing Set: You can expand your own sets or even add to your opponents' sets (if you've already played at least one set). Cards added must fit the historical period and be placed in the correct order.

3. Discard
End your turn by discarding one card.

Special Cards for Twists and Turns

Historiae introduces two unique special cards to keep the game dynamic:

  • Paradox Card: Play a set in any order, breaking the chronological rule. However, your opponents can later reorder the set to claim the Paradox Card for themselves!
  • Political Turmoil Card: When drawn, all players must pass their entire hands to the next player in a clockwise direction. This shake-up can upend even the best-laid plans.

Winning the Game

The game ends when a player has no cards left in their hand.

Deck Depletion Rule

If the deck runs out, shuffle the discard pile to create a new draw deck, ensuring the game continues uninterrupted.
